KAYA: Filipino Americans for Progress: Our Mission

We come from all walks of life but we’re passionate about one thing, giving back to the community to ensure that our families and the next generation have a strong, supportive community and access to the services and opportunities to fulfill their aspirations.

KAYA: Filipino Americans for Progress was founded in January 2009, to build a political infrastructure to ensure
that the Filipino American community is represented in the electoral process and governance. KAYA was built
upon the infrastructure which the Filipinos for Obama Campaign had incubated for the 2008 Presidential
election. In 2009, the leadership of KAYA adopted the following mission statement:

KAYA’s mission is to mobilize the Filipino American community and build partnerships to increase our electoral power, advocate policies that affect our community, and develop leaders to represent us at every level of government.

To strengthen its political infrastructure, KAYA sought to support potential allies by campaigning for candidates,
cultivate potential volunteers, and build relationships with potential donors. KAYA aimed to leverage these assets
to support progressive Filipino American candidates and public servants who would represent the interests of the
Filipino American community in key decision making offices.

KAYA aimed to build the capacity of individual leaders in the Filipino American through programming, internal
leadership development, and creating mentorship and networking opportunities for KAYA members and
supporters.

KAYA sought to influence policy decisions that would impact the interests of the Filipino American
community, by formally and informally organizing community support for key pieces of legislation, administrative
decisions, on the local, state and national level.

In its first three years, KAYA has demonstrated that effective grassroots organizing and creative communications
can translate into electoral success and influence within political spheres. We look forward to making that happen with you.

KAYA is a national organization with members all over the country. Many of our campaigns are launched online and much of the discussion of issues and voter/community education begins online. But the discussion doesn’t just happen, we need to step up to giving visibility to the people and issues that we care about and that affect our community. This is where your interests, expertise, and writing ability come in.

Passionate about access to health care for Filipino Americans? Have something to say about immigration reform that Filipino Americans needs to know about? Maybe you have thought-provoking, well-informed commentary on a number of issues! We’re looking for bloggers to join our team and enhance to our online community.
